This is my case, and this is the case for most doctoral students that I know note that my point of view is biased towards doctoral students and PhDs in science and engineering, it is a choice made voluntarily, I left an R & D engineering position and refused other proposals to start. An excellent doctoral student pursues a doctorate to deepen his research. A good doctoral student is doing research to get. or my part I had two hobbies during my doctorate: running and speaking in public. Both activities helped me a lot in dealing with the stress and frustration that a thesis can generate. During most of the Ph.D. I was able to alternate between these two hobbies and as the deadline for the defense approached, I had to reduce these activities and then resume them soon afterwards.
